Description The Romans brought the donkey to the Carpathian Basin. In the last century crossings with Italian donkey breeds took place (Martin Franca, Ragusai, Sicilians). They wanted to get bigger donkeys for mule breeding. The Hungarian steppe donkey has been officially recognized as a breed since 2004.

Stock Numbers 2016: 718 breeding mares, 38 stalloins, 101 breeder
2020: 850 breeding mares, 70 stallions, 120 breeder
