History |
Conformation was transitional Pindos-Thessalian and effectively distinct to Pindos and Thessalian proper. In recent years, type of Axios horses has become more uniform and more divergent from other populations possibly due to isolation, over the last four decades. There was also some English Thoroughbred influence. It is believed they descend from abandoned horses in the post war period. |
Need for Action |
Fencing of the entrance to the area (near the National road) hopefully will be financed by the local authorities as we proposed. That would keep horses away from the national road and private farms. Burying of all dead animals in order to avoid contamination. Illegal activities in the National Park should be punished. Old fences and new illegal ones should be destroyed. The population of the horses should be monitored more often. The area is very flat and the bushes make it difficult to find small groups of horses. |
